Located
in the heart of Amsterdam, Café Oporto is a typical Dutch ‘brown’ bar.
So
called because of the unique atmosphere of nicotine-stained walls
and dark wooden interior, brown bars have been an integral
part of Amsterdam for centuries.
The
façade and interior of the building, located at Zoutsteeg 1,
were renovated by the renowned Dutch architect, Gerrit van Arkel in
1896; whilst the stunning zodiac designs painted on wood were
produced around the same date by Johan Georg van Caspel. Since then,
there has always been a bar on the site,
serving traditional Dutch gins and foaming beers.
Today,
whilst the character and surroundings are little changed, Cafe
Oporto has a modern, friendly appeal. We look forward to welcoming you to
21st century Amsterdam for a drink in
our traditional brown bar.
